The history of Vietnam Airlines began in 1956 when the government of North Vietnam founded Air Vietnam, the first national airline of the country. Initially, the airline operated a small fleet of Douglas DC-3 aircraft and flew to a handful of destinations in the region. Over the years, the airline slowly expanded its operations and by the late 1970s had become one of the largest airlines in the region.

In 1989, Air Vietnam merged with Air Lao, another state-owned airline in Laos. The new airline was renamed Vietnam Airlines and it became the national flag carrier of both North and South Vietnam. The airline moved its headquarters from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City and began to expand its operations to other parts of Asia.

In the 1990s, Vietnam Airlines began to modernize its fleet by introducing new aircraft such as the Boeing 767 and Airbus A320. The airline also began to expand its network to other parts of the world, including Europe, Australia, and the United States. The airline also launched its very first international route in 1997, flying from Hanoi to Tokyo.

Since then, Vietnam Airlines has continued to expand its network, adding new routes to destinations such as New York, Sydney, and Dubai. The airline also embarked on a major fleet upgrade program, replacing its older aircraft with modern, fuel-efficient models such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The airline has also become a major player in the region's aviation industry, winning numerous awards and accolades from industry bodies and publications. In 2020, the airline was voted "Best Airline in Southeast Asia" by Skytrax, a leading aviation rating agency.

Despite its success, Vietnam Airlines has not been without its share of controversy. In 1999, one of its planes was shot down by a Chinese fighter jet, killing all 64 people onboard. In 2007, the airline was involved in a major scandal when it was revealed that some of its pilots had falsified their flying records. In 2014, the airline was investigated by the US Department of Transportation for possible violations of US anti-trust laws.
