Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) is located in Greer, South Carolina, USA, about halfway between the cities of Greenville and Spartanburg. Founded in 1962, it has become one of the busiest airports in the Southeast.

In the 1950s, the Greenville-Spartanburg area was growing rapidly, with more and more people moving to the area. The population of the two cities combined was over 100,000 by 1960, and it was clear that the area needed an airport to accommodate its growing population.

In 1961, a group of local business leaders formed the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport Commission to create an airport for the region. The Commission purchased a large tract of land in Greer, South Carolina, and construction of the airport began in 1962. The airport opened its doors on August 1, 1962 and was officially dedicated on October 20, 1962.

In the early years, the airport served primarily as a regional hub for general aviation. It was not until the late 1960s that commercial airlines began to serve the airport, with Delta Air Lines beginning nonstop flights to Atlanta in 1969.

The airport was originally known as Greenville-Spartanburg Regional Airport, but in 1978, the name was changed to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport to reflect its growing importance as a regional air hub. The airport code GSP was determined by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Today, Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport is a major hub for commercial and private aviation. It is served by nine commercial airlines, including Delta, American, United, and Allegiant Air, which offer daily nonstop flights to 14 cities across the United States. The airport offers over 70 daily departures, and more than 1.5 million passengers pass through the airport’s terminals each year.

In addition to its commercial air traffic, GSP is also home to many corporate and private aircraft. The airport is home to the South Carolina Air National Guard, as well as several aviation-related businesses.
