RBA was established in 1974 as the national airline of Brunei and was initially known as Brunei Airways. The airline’s first aircraft was a Fokker F27 Friendship, which was acquired from the Royal Air Force of Oman and operated its first domestic flight in 1975.

In 1983, the airline was rebranded as Royal Brunei Airlines and was granted rights to operate international flights. The airline began services to Singapore in 1985, followed by flights to the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe in the late 1980s.

RBA currently operates a fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Airbus A320neo, and Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The 787 Dreamliner, which entered service in 2013, is the airline’s flagship aircraft and is used on long-haul routes to Europe and Australia. The Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737-800 aircraft are used on medium- and short-haul flights, respectively.

Throughout its history, RBA has achieved numerous milestones, including:

1. In 1984, RBA was the first airline in the region to introduce the Boeing 737-200, which was the first jet aircraft to be operated by the airline.

2. In 1995, RBA became the first airline in South East Asia to introduce a fully automated frequent flyer program, known as the Royal Skies program.

3. In 2004, RBA became the first airline in the world to introduce a fully automated inflight entertainment system, known as ERA (Entertainment on Demand).

4. In 2009, RBA became the first airline in Southeast Asia to introduce the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and the first airline in the world to introduce the aircraft with all-Business Class seating.

5. In 2013, RBA was the first airline in the world to introduce the Airbus A320neo, which features the latest in fuel-efficient engines and modern passenger amenities.

Over the years, RBA has experienced a few incidents, including a crash in 1992 when a Boeing 737-200 passenger aircraft crashed while attempting to land in Kuching, Malaysia. Fortunately, there were no fatalities in the incident. In 2018, the airline was also the subject of a federal investigation in the United Kingdom due to a possible violation of EU regulations on operating hours. The investigation was later dropped after the airline cooperated with authorities.

Today, Royal Brunei Airlines continues to be a leader in aviation, offering passengers safe and reliable air travel to a variety of destinations. The airline is committed to providing the highest levels of service and comfort, and to continuously investing in its fleet and operations to ensure that it remains competitive in the global aviation industry.
