The airport was originally known as Charlotte Municipal Airport and was opened in 1919 by the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce. The airport was used for commercial flights from 1927 when Eastern Air Lines began offering regular flights. In 1954, the airport was renamed to Douglas Municipal Airport in honor of the former mayor of Charlotte, Ben E. Douglas.

The airport underwent a massive expansion in the late 1950s and early 1960s, with the construction of a new terminal and the addition of a new runway. The airport was then renamed Charlotte/Douglas International Airport in 1982.
