Honoring Bravery and Valor: A Look at McGuire Field, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (JBMDL)

McGuire Field, also known as Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (JBMDL), is an airport, military base, and installation located in Wrightstown, New Jersey, USA. It is the oldest continuously operating military base in the United States, and is home to the 87th Air Base Wing, the 305th Air Mobility Wing, and the 514th Air Mobility Wing.

The field was originally constructed in 1917 as the McGuire Field Airfield to serve as a training facility for World War I pilots and aircrews. Originally named for Maj. Gen. Thomas F. McGuire, the airfield was initially used for training and later for emergency landings during the war. After the war, the airfield was closed and the land was sold off for development.

In 1927, the land was purchased by the U.S. Army and it was redeveloped as a military airfield. The airfield was renamed McGuire Field in honor of Major General Thomas F. McGuire, who had served as a pilot in World War I and was killed in action in 1945. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery and valor.

In 1940, the airfield was transferred to the Navy and renamed the Naval Air Station McGuire Field. During the Second World War, the airfield was used for training and for responding to emergency landings. In 1948, the Naval Air Station McGuire Field was decommissioned and the field was transferred to the U.S. Air Force.

The name Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (JBMDL) was officially given to the installation in 2009, when it was created through the merger of McGuire Air Force Base, Fort Dix, and Lakehurst Naval Air Station. The name was chosen to honor the three separate installations and the servicemen and women who have served at each.

McGuire Field is designated by the FAA as an international airport and is assigned the airport code WRI. The “W” reflects the international airline code for the United States, while the “RI” stands for “Riverside,” the nearest city to the airport.

McGuire Field currently has over 100 flights per day with service from major airlines such as American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, and Southwest Airlines. The airport also serves as a hub for cargo carriers such as FedEx, UPS, and DHL.

The airport is also home to the United States Air Force Reserve Command, and the 305th Air Mobility Wing, which is responsible for airlift and aerial refueling operations in the northeastern United States. Additionally, the base serves as a training center for the U.S. Air Force Reserve, the U.S. Army Reserve, and U.S. Navy Reserve.
