The airport was initially established in 1925 as the Candler Field, named after former Atlanta Mayor Asa Candler. The airport began with a single 5,500-foot runway and three hangars. By the 1950s, the airport had grown to become the busiest airport in the world and in 1971, the airport was renamed the William B. Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport in honor of the city's mayor at the time, William B. Hartsfield.

In 2003, the airport was renamed the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in honor of Hartsfield and the city’s second mayor, Maynard Jackson. The name change was part of a larger rebranding effort to better reflect the airport’s global reach and all the services it offers.

The airport code, ATL, was determined based on the airport's name, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The code is derived from the first letter of each word in the airport's name.
