Uncovering the History of Binder Canarias: From Local Investor-Founded Airline to European Aviation Giant

The history of Binder Canarias, a regional airline based in the Canary Islands of Spain, dates back to 1986 when it was founded by a group of local investors. Since then, the airline has evolved from a small regional carrier to a major player in the European aviation industry.

The airline began operations with a single 18-seat Beechcraft 1900 aircraft, which was used to provide scheduled services to the islands of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Tenerife. In the early 1990s, the airline expanded its fleet to include larger aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. By the late 1990s, the airline had grown to become one of the largest regional carriers in Spain.

One of the most important milestones in Binder Canarias’ history was in 2001 when the airline became part of the Iberia Regional Airline Alliance, a partnership between several Spanish airlines. This partnership allowed Binder Canarias to expand its services to other parts of Spain, as well as other European countries.

In 2007, Binder Canarias became part of the Air Nostrum airline, which is owned by Iberia. This allowed the airline to further expand its network to destinations in Africa, Asia, and South America.

Over the years, the airline has steadily increased its fleet size, and currently operates more than 30 aircraft, including the Airbus A320 family, Boeing 737 family, Bombardier CRJ200, and Embraer E-Jet family. The airline also operates a fleet of helicopters for transportation to remote areas.

Binder Canarias has had a few incidents in its history, including a fatal air crash in 1992 that killed all 18 passengers and crew on board. The crash was caused by a mechanical failure in one of the engines. The airline was also the subject of an investigation by the Spanish government in 2004 for alleged safety violations.

Despite these incidents, the airline has continued to grow and evolve over the years, and is now considered one of the most reliable and respected airlines in Europe. It has won numerous awards for its customer service and is one of the few airlines to have received an “Excellent” rating from the European Aviation Safety Agency.

Today, Binder Canarias operates more than 600 flights every week to over 50 destinations across Europe, Africa, and the Americas. The airline has become one of the most popular regional carriers in Spain, with millions of passengers choosing to fly with Binder Canarias every year.
