Discover the Fascinating History of LEVEL Airlines: A Timeline from 2009 to Present

The history of LEVEL (formerly OpenSkies) dates back to 2008, when the airline was first founded as a subsidiary of British Airways, who owned 100% of the airline. The airline was established with the purpose of offering more transatlantic flights between the United States and Europe, as well as acting as a low-cost alternative to British Airways’ own premium services.

The first LEVEL flights took off in June 2009, with the airline’s first route between Paris and New York. The airline quickly expanded its presence, launching routes from Paris to both Barcelona and Vienna, as well as from New York to Amsterdam. By the end of 2009, LEVEL had already grown to a fleet of seven Boeing 757-200s, which served as the backbone of the airline’s fleet.

Over the years, LEVEL has continued to expand its operations and fleet. In 2011, the airline added two Boeing 767-300ERs to its fleet, and in 2014, it added two Airbus A340-300s. In 2017, the airline added the Boeing 787-9 to its fleet and began offering a premium business class product.

In addition to expanding its fleet, LEVEL has also expanded its route network. In 2010, the airline launched its first transatlantic route from Paris to Washington, D.C., and in 2016, the airline launched its first transpacific route from Paris to San Francisco. In 2020, the airline launched its first routes to South America, with flights from Paris to Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo.

Throughout its history, LEVEL has had a few notable incidents and milestones. In 2012, the airline suffered its first major incident, when one of its Boeing 757s experienced a landing gear failure on a flight from Paris to Toronto. Fortunately, none of the passengers were injured in the incident.

In 2015, LEVEL became the first low-cost airline to join IATA, the International Air Transport Association, and in 2018, the airline became the first low-cost airline to offer long-haul flights from Europe to the United States.

In 2019, LEVEL rebranded itself as part of its evolution into a low-cost, long-haul airline. As part of the rebranding, the airline changed its name to LEVEL and introduced a new logo and branding.

Today, LEVEL has grown to become one of the most popular low-cost, long-haul airlines in Europe. The airline currently operates a fleet of 13 aircraft, including Airbus A340-300s, Boeing 787-9s, and Boeing 767-300ERs. The airline flies to more than 30 destinations throughout Europe, North America, South America, and the Caribbean.
