The airport was constructed in 1989, replacing the old Stapleton International Airport. The new airport was originally named Denver International Airport, reflecting its much larger size and international service. The airport was built with a long-term vision, as it was designed to accommodate the growth of air traffic in the region for decades to come.

The airport was officially dedicated on February 28, 1995, and has since become the primary airport for the Rocky Mountain region. Its three main runways each measure more than 16,000 feet long and can accommodate the largest commercial aircraft in the world. DEN is also home to a state-of-the-art air traffic control tower and a modern terminal complex.

The airport code "DEN" was determined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the global standard-setting body for the aviation industry. The ICAO assigns four letter codes to airports around the world, based on the name of the city where the airport is located. In the case of DEN, the "DEN" stands for Denver.

DEN has become an increasingly busy airport, with more than 1,000 flights a day. It serves as a hub for United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Frontier Airlines, as well as a focus city for Frontier and Allegiant Air. A number of international airlines also serve DEN, including Air Canada, British Airways, Lufthansa, and KLM.

Denver International Airport has become a symbol of the city of Denver. In 2018, the airport was officially rebranded as Denver International Airport: The Mile High City, to reflect its location in the Mile High City and the state of Colorado.

The airport has become a major international hub and is renowned for its modern amenities, including an impressive selection of restaurants and retail outlets, as well as a variety of pet relief areas and charging stations. DEN continues to grow and evolve, making it one of the busiest and most efficient airports in the United States.
