The airport's history dates back to the early 1900s, when it was initially used as a military airfield by the Army Air Corps. After the end of World War II, the airfield was transferred to the City of Newport News and the name was changed to Newport News Municipal Airport. In 1953, the airport was renamed Patrick Henry Airport, in honor of the famous Revolutionary War patriot and Virginia native.

The airport underwent a major expansion in the 1960s, and it was renamed Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport in 1970. This name was chosen to reflect the area's rich history and the fact that it is the gateway to both Newport News and Williamsburg.
