The airline was established with the goal of providing air transportation services to the Somali people who were suffering from the brutal civil war that was ravaging the country. The airline initially operated a single Fokker 50 aircraft, with flights to Mogadishu, Bossaso, and Hargeisa.

Jubba Airways was the first Somali airline to receive approval from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The airline continued to expand its operations and in 2000, they had a fleet of three Fokker 50 aircraft. In 2002, the airline started operating a Boeing 727 aircraft.

Throughout the years, Jubba Airways has experienced a number of important milestones. In 2003, the airline became the first Somali carrier to be approved by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). This gave them access to international markets and vastly expanded their operations.

In 2004, the airline was awarded the “Best Airline in East Africa” award by the African Civil Aviation Commission. In 2006, the airline began operating an Airbus A320 aircraft, which marked the first time a Somali airline was operating a jet aircraft.

In 2007, Jubba Airways began operating flights to Europe. This marked the first time a Somali airline was operating international flights. In 2008, the airline received approval from the United Nations to operate humanitarian flights to Somalia. This allowed them to provide transportation for medical personnel, food, and other essential supplies.

Unfortunately, Jubba Airways has been involved in a few incidents over the years. In 2004, one of its Boeing 727 aircraft crashed in Ethiopia due to a technical issue. In 2007, the airline was the subject of a federal investigation in the United States due to allegations of providing financial assistance to terrorist groups. The investigation was later dropped due to lack of evidence.

Today, Jubba Airways operates a fleet of three Boeing 737-800 aircraft, as well as an Airbus A320 aircraft. The airline operates flights to more than 10 destinations in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. In the past two decades, the airline has grown from a small regional carrier to an international airline, providing air transportation for thousands of passengers every year.
