The story of Japan Airlines (JAL) begins in 1951, when the Japanese government created the Japan National Airways (JNA). JNA was Japan’s first international airline and the first to fly to the United States. In 1953, the Japanese government rebranded JNA to Japan Airlines (JAL).
JAL’s first fleet consisted of Douglas DC-3 and DC-4 aircraft, which were used mainly for domestic flights. In 1958, JAL began its first international services, linking Tokyo with San Francisco and Los Angeles. JAL soon began expanding its fleet, adding Boeing 707s, 720s, and 727s.
In 1962, JAL became the first Far Eastern carrier to fly the Boeing 747. The addition of the 747 allowed JAL to offer non-stop flights from Tokyo to the United States. JAL also began offering flights to Europe and other destinations in Asia.
In the 1970s, JAL expanded its fleet to include the Boeing 767 and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10. The airline also began offering flights to destinations in South America.
In the 1980s, JAL began replacing its aging fleet with newer and quieter aircraft. The airline added the Boeing 757, 767, and 777, as well as the Airbus A300 and A310. JAL also began offering flights to the Middle East and Africa.
In the 1990s, JAL began introducing new services, such as in-flight entertainment, Internet access, and satellite phone service. The airline also launched its frequent flyer program, JAL Mileage Bank, in 1994.
In the 2000s, JAL began phasing out its aging fleet, replacing them with newer and more efficient aircraft, such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The airline also began offering flights to destinations in India, China, and other parts of Asia.

The most notable incidents include the 1985 crash of JAL Flight 123, which killed 520 passengers, and the 2002 crash of JAL Flight 907, which killed nine passengers. In addition, JAL has been the subject of several federal investigations, most recently in 2009 for allegations of price-fixing.
Despite these incidents, JAL has continued to be a leader in the aviation industry. The airline has continued to expand its fleet and services, offering flights to more than 80 destinations in 28 countries. JAL has also continued to focus on customer service, introducing new amenities and launching innovative programs, such as its “JAL Smile Service.”
