Discovering the History and Economic Impact of Greenville Donaldson Center Airport (GDC)

Greenville Donaldson Center Airport (GDC) is located in Greenville, South Carolina, United States. It is a medium-sized public use airport owned and operated by the Greenville County Aviation Commission.

The airport was originally established in 1941 as Donaldson Air Base and served as a training airfield for the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. It was named in honor of Major Thomas J. Donaldson, a local Greenville resident who was killed in action over Europe during the war.

The airport was turned over to Greenville County in 1946 and was renamed Greenville Donaldson Center Airport, reflecting its original Air Base name and the fact that the airport is located in the center of Greenville.
