The airport was originally established in 1942 as an auxiliary landing field for the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. The airport was originally called the Fort Morgan Auxiliary Field, and was used as a training facility for pilots. After the war, the auxiliary field was deactivated, and the airport was renamed the Fort Morgan Municipal Airport.
