The airport was first proposed in 1924 by the Allegheny County Airport Authority, and the first phase of construction began in 1928. The original terminal building was completed in 1931 and the airport opened on June 5th, 1931, with the first flight taking off that same day.

The airport quickly grew to become one of the largest hubs in the United States. During World War II, the airport saw a huge increase in traffic as it served as a major hub for military aircraft. After the war, the airport continued to expand and in 1955, the airport was renamed Greater Pittsburgh International Airport.

In 1967, the airport was renamed again to Pittsburgh International Airport. This name was chosen to reflect the airport's growing international presence in the aviation industry. The airport code, PIT, is derived from the first three letters of the airport's name.

Today, Pittsburgh International Airport serves as a major hub for both domestic and international flights. The airport has around 500 flights a day and serves more than 20 different airlines, including American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, and Southwest Airlines.





Pittsburgh International Airport is also home to the United States Air Force Reserve Command, which is responsible for training, equipping, and deploying airmen of the United States Air Force. Additionally, the airport is home to the Pittsburgh Air Reserve Station, which is the largest Air Force Reserve base in the United States.
