The airport was originally established in 1936 as the Myrtle Beach Municipal Airport. At the time, it was mainly used for military training by the United States Army Air Corps. The airport was later renamed Myrtle Beach Air Force Base in 1948, when the military took full control of the airport.

In 1972, the airport was handed over to the City of Myrtle Beach, and the name was changed to Myrtle Beach International Airport. The new name was chosen to reflect the increasing number of international travelers that were beginning to use the airport.
