The Rise of SpiceJet: India's Leading Airline

SpiceJet is an Indian low-cost airline headquartered in Gurgaon, India. It is the fourth largest airline in India by market share as of October 2020. The airline operates more than 500 daily flights to over 45 destinations across India and abroad.

Founded in May 2005, SpiceJet was initially a regional airline offering domestic flights to small cities across India. It was founded by Indian businessman Ajay Singh with the aim of providing affordable air travel to Indians. In the subsequent years, SpiceJet began to expand its operations and introduced international flights, boosting its presence in the Indian aviation market.

The airline's fleet consists mainly of Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft and Bombardier Q400s. As of October 2020, SpiceJet has a fleet of 142 aircraft, comprising of 98 Boeing 737 Next Generation, 31 Bombardier Q400s and 13 Bombardier Dash 8 Q400s. The airline also operates a small fleet of Airbus A320s.

SpiceJet has achieved many milestones over the years, some of which are:

• In 2006, SpiceJet launched its first international flights between Chennai and Colombo.

• In 2008, the airline launched its low-cost service, SpiceJet Economy, which offered discounted fares and no frills service.

• In 2009, the airline became the first Indian carrier to launch a mobile booking application.

• In 2011, SpiceJet was the first Indian airline to introduce in-flight entertainment on domestic flights.

• In 2012, the Budget Carrier won the award for “India’s Best Airline” at the Economic Times Aviation Awards.

• In 2015, SpiceJet launched its first international destination from India to Dubai.

• In 2016, the airline became the first Indian carrier to launch a loyalty program, SpiceClub.

• In 2017, SpiceJet became the first Indian airline to introduce the new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.

• In 2019, the airline launched its direct flights from India to the United States.

• In 2020, the airline became the first Indian carrier to launch a cargo-only flight to the United States.

SpiceJet has come a long way since its inception, and it is now one of the major players in the Indian aviation industry. Today, it operates more than 500 flights daily and serves more than 45 destinations across India and abroad.
