The Incredible Journey of Air Saint-Pierre: From Humble Beginnings to International Recognition

Air Saint-Pierre (ASP) is a French airline that was founded in 1962 and is based in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, a French overseas collectivity located near Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The airline has a fleet of two aircraft and provides scheduled services to destinations in the Caribbean, North America, and Europe. ASP has grown from its humble beginnings to become an internationally recognized airline, providing service and reliability to its passengers.

ASP has a long and storied history, starting in 1962 when the airline was founded by two French pilots, Pierre and Jacques Lesage. The Lesage brothers had been flying for the French Air Force and wanted to start their own airline. They started with a single aircraft and began providing flights between Saint-Pierre and Miquelon and destinations in Canada and the United States.

In 1968, ASP became the first international airline to operate a flight between the United States and Saint-Pierre and Miquelon. The airline quickly grew and by the 1970s had expanded its fleet, adding two more aircraft and increasing its number of destinations. ASP also began offering charter services to destinations around the world.

In the 1980s, ASP began expanding its fleet and began offering services to destinations across Europe, including Paris, London, and Amsterdam. The airline also began offering cargo services and became the first airline to offer scheduled flights between the Caribbean and Europe.

In the 1990s, ASP continued to expand its services and established a partnership with Air France, allowing the airline to offer connecting flights between Canada, the United States, and Europe. The airline also began offering flights to destinations in Africa and the Middle East.

In 2004, ASP became the first airline to fly to the French Caribbean island of Saint-Martin, and in 2006, the airline began offering scheduled flights to Cuba. In 2012, the airline became the first French airline to offer flights to Haiti.

In 2014, ASP became the first airline to offer direct flights from Paris to Cuba and in 2016, the airline began offering flights to Martinique. In 2017, the airline began offering scheduled services to Reunion Island, becoming the first French airline to offer scheduled services to the island.

ASP has experienced a number of incidents throughout its history. In 1982, one of the airline’s aircraft crashed off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, killing all 17 passengers and crew onboard. In 2009, the airline was subject to a federal investigation after it was discovered that the airline had been flying passengers without proper documentation. The investigation resulted in a fine of $100,000 USD.

ASP has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1962. The airline has grown from a single aircraft to a fleet of two, and from providing flights to Canada and the United States to offering services to destinations across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. Despite a few bumps in the road, ASP has become a reliable and safe airline and continues to be a leader in the industry.
