Discovering the Journey of Myanmar Airways International - From Pioneering Success to Major Player in the Aviation Industry

The history of Myanmar Airways International (MAI) is an interesting one, filled with trials and tribulations, successes and disappointments. Founded in 1993, MAI is the major flag carrier of Myanmar and serves as the country’s primary international gateway.

MAI has experienced a number of changes over the years, from its fleet and destinations to its ownership and management structure. In its early days, MAI operated a fleet of 5 Boeing 737-200s and 7 Fokker F-27s, which were used to serve domestic and regional destinations. By the mid-2000s, MAI had expanded its fleet to include Airbus A310s and A319s, and had begun to serve long-haul international destinations, including routes to China and the Middle East.

One of MAI’s most significant milestones came in 2006, when it became the first airline in Myanmar to receive the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification. This certification marked a major step forward for the airline, as it demonstrated that MAI was compliant with international safety standards and was thus eligible for membership in IATA.

In 2009, MAI underwent a major restructuring, with the airline’s ownership and management structure being changed to comply with Myanmar’s “open sky” policy. Under this new policy, MAI was able to form partnerships with other airlines, allowing it to expand its network and offer more international services.

In 2012, MAI celebrated its 19th anniversary with the launch of a new fleet of Airbus A320s, which were used to serve both domestic and international routes. The airline also launched its first international codeshare agreement, with Singapore Airlines, which allowed MAI to offer more international services.

Unfortunately, MAI has also experienced some dark times. In 2014, an MAI plane was involved in a fatal accident at Yangon International Airport. The crash, which killed two people, was attributed to a lack of proper maintenance and an inexperienced pilot. Following the accident, MAI was subject to an investigation by the International Civil Aviation Organization, which resulted in several changes to the airline’s safety procedures.

Despite these setbacks, MAI has continued to grow and evolve over the years. In 2017, the airline launched a new loyalty program, which allowed passengers to earn rewards when they fly with MAI. The airline has also expanded its fleet and network, and now serves over 40 destinations across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

MAI has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1993, and it is now a major player in the Myanmar aviation industry. It has experienced its share of highs and lows, but has emerged stronger and better prepared to meet the challenges of the future.
