Garuda Indonesia was founded in 1947 by Agustinus Adisucipto, a former Indonesian Air Force officer. The airline began operations with a single De Havilland Dragon Rapide aircraft and quickly expanded its fleet over the next few years. The airline's first international flight was in 1958, when it flew from Jakarta to Singapore.

The airline has since grown significantly, and by the late 1960s, it had become the largest airline in Indonesia. By the 1970s, it was operating flights to a number of destinations in Asia, including Japan, Australia, and the United States. In the 1980s, the airline began operating trans-Pacific flights to the United States.

Garuda Indonesia currently has a fleet of over 100 aircraft, consisting of Airbus, Boeing, and Bombardier models. The airline operates flights to over 50 destinations around the world, including several in Europe, the Middle East, and the United States.

Over the years, Garuda Indonesia has achieved several important milestones. In 1989, it became the first Asian airline to be granted International Air Transport Association (IATA) certification. In 1994, the airline was granted membership in the International Air Transport Association (IATA). In 2005, it became the first Indonesian carrier to join the Star Alliance.

In 2008, the airline achieved another milestone when it became the first Indonesian carrier to join the SkyTeam alliance. The same year, the airline also launched a new frequent flyer program, GarudaMiles. This program has since grown to become one of the most popular in the region.

Unfortunately, the airline has also been involved in some major incidents in its history. In 1997, a Garuda Indonesia flight crashed in Medan, Indonesia, killing all 234 passengers and crew on board. This crash was the worst in the airline's history.

In recent years, the airline has also been the subject of a number of federal investigations. In 2014, the United Nations' International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) launched an investigation into the airline's safety practices. The investigation was prompted by a number of reports of safety violations. The investigation concluded in 2016 and revealed a number of safety violations and deficiencies.

Despite the setbacks, Garuda Indonesia has continued to grow and evolve over the years. The airline is now one of the largest carriers in Southeast Asia and has achieved many milestones. From its humble beginnings in 1947, the airline has grown to become a major player in the region's aviation industry.
