A Symbol of Connection and Progress: The Story of Air North, Canada's Oldest and Largest Northern Airline

Air North is a Canadian regional airline that operates in the Yukon Territory and northwestern British Columbia. Founded in 1977, Air North is the oldest and largest northern airline in Canada, and one of the few airlines in the world to offer scheduled service to all four populated regions of the Canadian Arctic. The airline has a rich history, and has played an integral role in connecting the isolated communities of the Yukon and Northwest Territories with the outside world.

Air North was founded by Captain Bob Johnson and his wife, Norma, in 1977. The airline began operations with a single Cessna 185, flying out of Whitehorse, Yukon to the remote communities of Old Crow and Dawson City. Over the next two decades, Air North would expand its operations to include flights to other Yukon and Northwest Territories communities, as well as scheduled service to Alberta, British Columbia, and Alaska.

Today, Air North operates a diverse fleet of aircraft, including Boeing 737-200s, Bombardier Dash 8s, and Beechcraft King Airs. The airline is heavily invested in the Yukon, with its main base of operations still located in Whitehorse. Air North also operates a satellite office in Vancouver, British Columbia, which handles marketing and sales for the company.

Throughout its history, Air North has experienced a number of important milestones. In 1982, the airline became the first Canadian carrier to receive a US FAA certification, allowing it to fly international routes. In 1989, the airline was the first in the country to receive a Canadian Transport Agency certification to operate scheduled service. In 1997, Air North became the first airline in Canada to operate a fleet of Bombardier Dash 8s. In 2005, the airline became the first in the country to receive a Canadian Aviation Safety Agency certification to operate Boeing 737-200s. Finally, in 2018, Air North became the first Canadian carrier to offer scheduled service to all four populated regions of the Canadian Arctic.

Air North has played an important role in connecting the isolated communities of the Yukon and Northwest Territories with the outside world. Through its commitment to providing safe, reliable, and affordable air service, Air North has become a symbol of connection and progress in the Canadian North.
