Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, located in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, is the largest airport in the state of Hawaii and the busiest airport in the United States outside of the continental United States. It is named after the late U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye, who served in the Senate from 1963 to 2012 and was a recipient of the Medal of Honor. The original runway was extended in the 1950s, and in 1959 the airport was renamed again, this time to Honolulu International Airport. The airport was then renamed again in 1967 to the present day Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, in honor of Senator Inouye's service to the nation.

The airport code HNL was determined by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The code is derived from the first two letters of the airport's name - Honolulu.
