Orlando International Airport (MCO) is an international airport located in Orlando, Florida. It is the busiest airport in the state of Florida and the 11th busiest airport in the United States. The airport is owned and operated by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA).
The airport’s history dates back to the 1940s, when the U.S. Army Air Corps established the Orlando Army Air Base during World War II. The base was used to train pilots and other personnel for the war effort. After the war ended, the airport was transferred to the City of Orlando and became the Orlando Municipal Airport.
In the 1970s, the airport’s name was changed to Orlando International Airport to better reflect its international status and its ability to handle larger aircraft. In 1985, the airport was officially designated as Orlando International Airport (MCO). The MCO code was derived from the airport’s former name — the “M” was for Municipal, and the “CO” was for Orlando.
Today, Orlando International Airport is a major hub for both domestic and international flights. It is served by many major commercial airlines, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines. The airport averages more than 800 flights per day.
In addition to its commercial service, Orlando International Airport also serves as a hub for military and cargo operations. The airport has seen an increase in cargo traffic in recent years due to its proximity to the growing tourism industry in the Orlando area.
