The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is the primary international airport serving the Dallas-Fort Worth region in Texas, USA. It is the largest hub for American Airlines and the world's fourth busiest airport in terms of total passenger traffic.
The airport was first conceived in the late 1940s and construction began in 1968. It was officially opened in 1974 and was the first airport in the United States to offer scheduled international services. The airport was initially named Dallas-Fort Worth Regional Airport but was changed to its current name in 1985. The name change was made to better reflect the airport's growing international status.
The airport code DFW was assigned to the airport by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in 1985. The code is an acronym for the airport's name and is also a reference to the two cities it serves, Dallas and Fort Worth.
