The airport was created in 1934, when the United States Army Air Corps announced plans to build an airfield on the site. The airfield was originally named Glenn L. Martin Airport, after the aircraft manufacturer of the same name. The airfield was used as a training base during World War II and was also used by the Navy Reserve and Air National Guard.

In 1967, the airport was renamed Martin State Airport, to honor the memory of Glenn L. Martin and his contributions to aviation. The airport code, MTN, was assigned by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and stands for “Martin State Airport.”
