It was used by the Army Air Corps during World War II as a training base for B-25 bombers.

The airport was renamed Dobbins Air Force Base in 1948 after Charles E. Dobbins, a Georgia native who was a member of the United States Army Air Corps and was killed during World War II. The base was used in the 1950s as a Strategic Air Command base and was also used for various other operations, including the US Space Shuttle Program in the 1980s and 1990s.
