The airport was originally known as Berlin-Tegel International Airport, but was later renamed in honour of Otto Lilienthal, a pioneering German aviator who was killed in an aircraft accident in 1896. It was thought appropriate to name the airport after Lilienthal since he was a native of Berlin and a key figure in the city's aviation history.

The airport code TXL was determined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and is derived from the airport's original name. The “T” stands for “Tegel”, while the “XL” stands for “X” and “L” which are the first two letters of “Lilienthal”.
