The airport was originally established in 1929 and was known as the Key Field, after the Key brothers, who owned the land on which the airport was built. The Key brothers had donated the land to the city in order to provide an airport for the local community. The airport was used for both passenger and military training during World War II.

The airport was renamed the Meridian Regional Airport in 1967, when the City of Meridian purchased the land from the Key brothers. The airport was further expanded in the mid-1970s, when a new terminal building and additional runways were added.

The airport code MEI was established in 1983 and is derived from the airport's name. It stands for Meridian International Airport.
