Unlocking the Skies: The History of Air Mikisew and Its Flight to Success

Air Mikisew is a regional Canadian air carrier operating out of Fort Chipewyan, Alberta. The airline was founded in 2008 to provide regular passenger and cargo services to isolated settlements and communities in the remote regions of Northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories.

Air Mikisew was founded by the Mikisew Group of Companies, a family-owned business with a long history in the transportation industry. The company's founder, Ovis Wheesk, was a pilot and aviation enthusiast who saw an opportunity to provide air transportation to isolated areas of Canada. In 2008, Air Mikisew began operations with just two aircraft, a Cessna 185 and a de Havilland Beaver.

The airline quickly expanded, adding new aircraft to its fleet as well as hiring more personnel. The addition of a Cessna Caravan in 2009 allowed Air Mikisew to provide scheduled air services to more remote communities. The following year, the airline added another aircraft, a Beechcraft King Air 200, to its fleet.

Throughout the years, Air Mikisew has become known for its reliable and safe service. The airline has implemented a comprehensive safety program and has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades by the Canadian Transportation Safety Board and other industry organizations.

Air Mikisew has experienced several important milestones throughout its history. In 2010, the airline established a new subsidiary, Air Mikisew Express, which specializes in air cargo services. The following year, the airline launched its first international flight, between Fort Chipewyan and Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

In 2012, Air Mikisew began offering scheduled flights to Inuvik, Northwest Territories, becoming the first airline to offer regularly scheduled flights between the two cities. That same year, the airline also became the first in Canada to operate a fleet of Bombardier Dash 8 aircraft.

In 2014, Air Mikisew became the first airline in Canada to offer a non-stop service between Fort Chipewyan and Yellowknife. That same year, the airline also added its first helicopter, a Bell 206, to its fleet.

Air Mikisew has experienced some turbulent times as well. In 2017, the airline was the subject of a federal investigation for alleged safety and financial irregularities. The investigation resulted in several changes to the airline's operations, including new safety protocols and improved financial management. The airline was cleared of all charges and resumed regular operations in 2018.

Air Mikisew has come a long way since its inception in 2008. The airline has steadily grown, building a reputation for reliable and safe service. With its fleet of both fixed-wing and rotary aircraft, Air Mikisew is able to provide air transportation to some of the most remote communities in Canada.
