Uncovering the Success Story of KLM CityHopper: A Look at the History, Milestones, and Challenges of Europe's Leading Regional Airline

KLM CityHopper is the regional airline arm of KLM, the Dutch flag carrier. Founded in 1989, the airline has become one of Europe’s most successful regional carriers, with a fleet of over 60 aircraft and a network of over 40 destinations across Europe.

The airline’s history began with the formation of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in 1919, when two Dutch aviation companies merged to become the world’s oldest airline still in operation today. As the airline expanded its operations to more countries, the need for a dedicated regional subsidiary arose. This led to the formation of KLM CityHopper in 1989, with the first flights beginning in 1991.

KLM CityHopper has grown steadily over the years, with its fleet of aircraft increasing from its initial seven Embraer ERJ-145s to over 60 aircraft today. In addition to the ERJ-145s, the airline also operates Fokker 70s, Fokker 100s, and Embraer 190s. The airline has also grown its network over the years, with its initial seven destinations to over 40 today, including the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland.

The airline has achieved several milestones over the years. In 1993, it became the first European airline to operate the Fokker 70 aircraft. In 2000, it took delivery of its first Embraer 190 and launched the “KLM Cityhopper Experience”, which included the introduction of in-flight entertainment and complimentary drinks and snacks. In 2004, KLM CityHopper became the first regional airline in Europe to operate the Embraer 190. In 2008, the airline celebrated its 20th anniversary and carried its 25 millionth passenger.

KLM CityHopper has also faced several challenges over the years. In 1997, one of its ERJ-145s crashed in the Netherlands, killing all 33 passengers and crew onboard. The airline also faced a federal investigation in 2008, when it was accused of misleading passengers about their rights to compensation for delayed or cancelled flights. The airline was cleared of any wrongdoing, but was forced to pay a fine of €1.5 million.

Despite these incidents, KLM CityHopper has continued to be one of Europe’s leading regional airlines. The airline has grown significantly over the years, increasing its fleet and network, and has achieved several important milestones along the way. Looking to the future, the airline plans to continue to expand its operations and provide its passengers with the best possible service.
