The JASDF’s early history was marked with the development of the F-86F fighter jet and the deployment of the first jet squadron in 1958. This was followed by the introduction of the F-4EJ Phantom II in 1969 and the F-15J Eagle in 1981.

The JASDF has been involved in several operations and exercises since its inception, including the first Japan-U.S. joint military exercises in the 1950s, the Vietnam War in the 1960s, operations in Iraq in the early 2000s, and most recently, the deployment of a detachment of F-15J aircraft to the Middle East in 2004.

The JASDF has a fleet of over 400 aircraft, consisting of fighters, transport aircraft, patrol aircraft, and helicopters. The F-15J Eagle is the main fighter aircraft in service, with over 200 aircraft in active service. Other aircraft in the fleet include the F-2A/B Vixen, F-4EJ Phantom II, C-130 Hercules, E-767 Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft, and the UH-60J Black Hawk helicopter.

The JASDF has been involved in several incidents and accidents over the years. In 1960, an F-86F fighter jet crashed in Hiroshima Prefecture, killing its pilot. In 1988, two F-4EJ Phantoms collided off of the coast of Fukuoka Prefecture, killing both pilots. In 1995, an F-15J Eagle crashed into a mountain in Iwate Prefecture, killing its pilot. In 2000, two F-4EJ Phantoms collided off the coast of Okinawa Prefecture, killing one pilot and injuring the other.

The JASDF has been involved in numerous milestones throughout its history. In 1974, the first female pilot was admitted to the JASDF, and in 1979 the first female officer was appointed to a command position. In 1994, the JASDF introduced the first version of its AWACS aircraft, the E-767. In 2004, the JASDF conducted its first ever air defense exercises with the U.S. Air Force. In 2006, the JASDF launched its first unmanned aerial vehicle, the UH-X.

The JASDF has evolved significantly over the years, transforming from a largely defensive force to a more proactive one. The JASDF has become increasingly involved in international operations and exercises, including the Global Hawk reconnaissance missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition, the JASDF has also modernized its fleet, introducing new aircraft such as the F-2A/B Vixen and UH-60J Black Hawk helicopter.

Overall, the JASDF has played an important role in Japan’s defense and continues to be a key part of the nation’s military. The JASDF has been involved in numerous operations and exercises, has maintained a fleet of modern aircraft, and has seen its roles and responsibilities expand in recent years.
