Uncovering the History of Avianca Express, Latin America's Second-Largest Airline

Avianca Express is a low-cost airline based in Colombia. It is a subsidiary of Avianca, the second-largest airline in Latin America. Avianca Express was founded in 2004 and began operations in 2006. It is headquartered in Bogotá, Colombia, and operates flights to many destinations in the Americas and the Caribbean.

Avianca Express’s first flight was on April 30, 2006, from Bogotá to Medellín. Since then, the airline has grown its fleet and route network significantly. It currently operates a fleet of 28 aircraft, including Airbus A320s and Embraer E-jets. The airline’s main hubs are Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali.

Avianca Express has had a number of important milestones since its inception. In 2007, the airline became the first Colombian carrier to join the Star Alliance network. This allowed the airline to offer flights to a wider range of destinations around the world. In 2008, the airline also launched its own frequent flyer program, Avianca Plus.

In 2011, Avianca Express became the first airline in Colombia to operate an all-jet fleet. The airline also began offering premium economy class seats on its flights. In 2016, the airline launched a new loyalty program, “Somos Todos Avianca” (We Are All Avianca), which rewards customers for their loyalty.

Avianca Express has been involved in a number of incidents over the years. In 2008, one of its flights from Bogotá to Cali experienced technical problems and had to make an emergency landing in Bucaramanga. In 2016, an Avianca Express flight from Bogotá to Medellín was forced to make an emergency landing due to a bomb threat. In 2017, the airline was involved in a fatal air crash that killed 71 people. The accident was later attributed to pilot error.

In 2018, Avianca Express was the subject of a federal investigation in the United States. The investigation focused on alleged fraudulent activity in the airline’s pricing practices. The investigation was later closed with no charges being filed against the airline.

Avianca Express has come a long way since its inception in 2006. It has grown its fleet and route network significantly and has become a major player in the Latin American aviation market. The airline has also launched a number of loyalty programs and initiatives, and has been involved in a number of incidents. Despite these challenges, Avianca Express continues to be an important part of the Avianca brand.
