Uncovering the History of ASKY Airlines: From West Africa to Europe

ASKY Airlines is a regional airline based in Lomé, Togo, in West Africa. Founded in 2008, it is the flag carrier of Togo and operates scheduled passenger flights to many destinations in West and Central Africa. The airline is owned by a consortium of several African governments, including Togo, the Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, and Guinea, and is managed by Ethiopian Airlines.

ASKY Airlines was created in 2008 as a joint venture of the governments of Togo, the Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, and Guinea. The airline was established in response to the need for reliable, cost-effective air transportation in the region. The airline was founded with the goal of providing West and Central African countries with improved access to air transportation and to increase economic growth in the region.

ASKY Airlines’ fleet consists of Boeing 737-800, 737-700, and Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 aircraft. The airline currently operates 4 Boeing 737-800, 5 Boeing 737-700, and 5 Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 aircraft, with plans to add more aircraft in the future. In addition, the airline has access to over 20 aircraft from its sister airline, Ethiopian Airlines.

ASKY Airlines has experienced a number of important milestones since its establishment. In 2010, the airline launched its first international flight, from Lomé to Douala, Cameroon. This marked the beginning of ASKY's international expansion, with the airline adding multiple destinations in West and Central Africa in the following years. In 2012, the airline became a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). This opened up the potential for ASKY to expand its network beyond Africa, while also enabling it to offer more competitive fares and improved customer service.

In 2013, ASKY became the official African carrier for the African Airlines Association (AFRAA). This allowed the airline to access a number of strategic partnerships and increase its presence in the African market. In 2017, the airline launched its first flight to Europe, from Lomé to Paris, France. This marked the first time an African airline had flown to Europe.

Unfortunately, the airline has experienced some incidents during its 12-year history. In 2012, an ASKY Airlines flight from Accra to Lomé experienced an engine failure, resulting in the aircraft landing safely in Lomé. In 2017, an ASKY Airlines flight from Lomé to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, experienced an electrical failure, but was able to make an emergency landing in Ouagadougou. Additionally, in 2016, the airline was the subject of a federal investigation by the United States Department of Justice. The investigation focused on the airline’s alleged violations of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and resulted in the airline being fined $1 million.

Since its establishment in 2008, ASKY Airlines has grown to become one of the leading airlines in West and Central Africa. The airline has experienced a number of important milestones, from launching its first international flight to becoming the official African carrier for AFRAA, and has overcome a number of challenges, including air crashes and federal investigations. Despite these challenges, the airline continues to grow and develop, making it an important part of the African aviation landscape.
