Spirit Airlines was founded as Charter One in 1964 by Ned Homfeld and a group of investors. The airline originally offered charter flights to popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America. In 1971, the airline changed its name to Clipper Trucking Company and began offering scheduled passenger flights. In 1980, the airline was rebranded as Spirit Airlines and began flying scheduled flights to the Bahamas and other Caribbean destinations.

Since its inception, Spirit Airlines has grown to become one of the largest ultra-low-cost carriers in the world. Its fleet has grown to include more than 120 aircraft, including Airbus A321s, Airbus A320s, and Embraer 190s. The airline currently serves more than 60 destinations in the United States, Caribbean, Mexico, and Latin America.

Throughout its history, Spirit Airlines has achieved several important milestones. The first was in 1984 when the airline began offering scheduled flights to the Caribbean. This was followed in 1989 when the airline launched its first international route to the Bahamas. In 2000, the airline became a public company and was listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange. In 2006, the airline launched its first route to Mexico and in 2011, it launched its first route to Latin America.

In 2012, Spirit Airlines was the first airline to offer a fully unbundled fare, allowing passengers to purchase only the services they need. This has become a cornerstone of the airline’s business model and has allowed them to offer some of the lowest airfares in the industry.

Throughout its history, there have been several incidents involving Spirit Airlines. In 1988, the airline was involved in a fatal accident in the Bahamas when one of its planes crashed, killing all 16 passengers and crew members onboard. In 2016, the airline was the subject of a federal investigation when the Department of Transportation found that the airline had violated consumer protection rules. The airline had to pay a $50 million fine and was ordered to improve its customer service.

Since its inception, Spirit Airlines has grown to become one of the leading ultra-low-cost carriers in the world. With its no-frills service and low fares, the airline has been able to offer travelers an affordable way to fly. While there have been some incidents involving the airline, it has been able to overcome these challenges and continue to provide an excellent service to its customers.
