The history of ZIPAIR Tokyo, founded in 2020, is still unfolding as the airline continues to expand its services and grow. However, ZIPAIR Tokyo has already made its mark on the industry, making it one of the fastest-growing low-cost airlines in the world.
Originally founded as AirAsia Japan in 2020, ZIPAIR Tokyo is a joint venture between AirAsia Japan and All Nippon Airways. This partnership has allowed the airline to benefit from both AirAsia's extensive know-how in the low-cost travel sector, as well as ANA's expertise in service and operations. ZIPAIR Tokyo operates out of Tokyo International Airport, and offers flights to destinations across Asia, including China, South Korea, and Thailand.
In its short history, ZIPAIR Tokyo has already achieved several important milestones. In 2020, the airline began its first international route, flying from Tokyo to Bangkok. This was followed by the launch of the airline’s first domestic route, between Tokyo and Sapporo. In 2021, ZIPAIR Tokyo became the first low-cost carrier in Japan to offer a loyalty program, allowing customers to earn points that can be redeemed for free flights and other rewards.
The airline operates a fleet of Airbus A320-200 aircraft, all of which are equipped with 180 economy class seats. The airline is currently in the process of expanding its fleet to include Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which will provide additional capacity and more comfortable seating for passengers.
In 2021, ZIPAIR Tokyo launched a new initiative, the ZIPAIR Tokyo Connect program. This program allows customers to connect to other airlines by using ZIPAIR Tokyo flights as a bridge. In 2021, ZIPAIR Tokyo launched its first domestic cargo service, offering same-day delivery from Tokyo to Osaka. This marked the first time that a low-cost carrier has offered cargo services in Japan.
Finally, in 2021, the airline took another important step towards becoming a global carrier, launching a new route between Tokyo and Los Angeles. This marks the first time that a low-cost carrier has flown between Japan and the United States.
