The airline was founded by entrepreneur Heinz Kremser and a group of investors. Kremser had previously worked in the airline industry, and he saw an opportunity to create a low-cost carrier to compete with the larger, more established airlines. The company was initially founded as a charter airline, offering cheap flights to popular holiday destinations.

In 1998, Air Hamburg began operating scheduled flights, offering low-cost flights to destinations in Germany, Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom. The airline quickly gained popularity and became one of the most successful low-cost carriers in Europe.

By the early 2000s, Air Hamburg had grown to become one of Germany's largest airlines. In 2002, the airline opened its first international base in Munich, and by 2003, Air Hamburg was operating flights to a total of 40 destinations. In 2005, the airline opened a new hub in Dusseldorf and began offering flights to destinations in North Africa and the Middle East.





In 2006, Air Hamburg celebrated its 10th anniversary with a fleet of more than 30 aircraft. The airline had become one of the most popular low-cost carriers in Europe, offering low-cost fares to more than 70 destinations.

In 2008, Air Hamburg was forced to cancel flights due to a series of air crashes. The airline suffered a series of crashes in 2008, prompting a federal investigation. The investigation led to changes in the airline's safety procedures and the introduction of a new safety program. Despite the disruption caused by the crashes, Air Hamburg continued to grow and in 2009, the airline opened a new hub in Berlin.
