Tofino Air is a Canadian airline based in the small town of Tofino, British Columbia. Founded in 1989, it has grown and diversified over the years, and now offers a range of services including air freight, charter flights, medevac, and sightseeing tours.
The airline was initially founded by local pilot and entrepreneur, Ken Slingerland. He saw the potential to provide air service to the area, as well as to the nearby Island communities. He purchased two small aircraft, a Cessna 206 and a Cessna 207, and began offering scheduled flights in the summer months. The first route was between Tofino and Vancouver.
In the years since, Tofino Air has grown steadily, and now operates a fleet of more than 15 aircraft, including both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. In addition to the original Cessna 206 and 207, the airline now operates several Cessna Caravans, a Beechcraft King Air 200, a Pilatus PC-12, and two Bell 206 LongRanger helicopters.
Tofino Air has achieved several key milestones since its founding. One of the most significant was in 2004 when the airline was awarded a long-term contract to provide air services to the communities of Haida Gwaii (formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands). This was the first time that the airline had provided services to a remote region, and the contract has been successfully renewed multiple times since then.
In 2008, Tofino Air launched a medevac service, in partnership with BC Ambulance Service. The service has been used to transport critically ill and injured patients, and has been credited with saving countless lives.
In 2011, Tofino Air was awarded a contract to provide air freight services to the remote Northern communities of BC. The service has been successful and has grown steadily over the years.
In 2014, Tofino Air launched an aerial sightseeing service, allowing visitors to explore the area from the air. The service has been very popular and has been responsible for a significant increase in tourism in the region.
In 2017, Tofino Air was the subject of a federal investigation. The investigation focused on allegations of improper maintenance and operational procedures, and was closed without any charges being laid.
Over the years, Tofino Air has built a strong reputation and is now one of the most trusted and reliable airlines in Canada. The company has grown significantly since its founding, and now employs over 100 people. Its dedication to providing quality service and safety has ensured its position as a leader in the aviation industry.
