As the airline expanded its fleet, it also began to offer flights to countries in North America and Europe.

In 1982, a Boeing 707 operated by Alta Flights crashed in the Amazon rainforest due to a technical failure, killing all on board. In 1988, Alta Flights was the subject of a federal investigation after reports of maintenance and safety violations.
