Discover the Fascinating History of MasAir: Mexico's Leading Airline

MasAir (formerly AeroMéxico) is a Mexican airline that has been in operation since the mid-1980s. Founded by the Lopez brothers and operated by Grupo Aeromexico, it is one of the oldest and most successful airlines in Mexico. The airline offers domestic and international flights and has a fleet of over 85 aircraft.

MasAir has played an important role in the development of Mexico’s aviation industry. It was the first Mexican airline to operate Boeing jets, and it was also the first to offer intercontinental flights, from Mexico to Europe and the United States.

The airline’s history began in 1984, when the Lopez brothers, who owned a small charter airline, decided to enter the commercial airline business. At the time, there was a lack of competition in the Mexican aviation industry, and the brothers saw an opportunity to fill that void.

The airline began operations in 1985, with a fleet of three Boeing 727s. It quickly expanded its fleet and its destinations, and by the end of the decade, MasAir had become one of the leading airlines in Mexico.

In the 1990s, the airline continued to expand its operations. It began offering flights to the United States and Europe and acquired a number of Boeing 767s and 737s. It also began offering cargo services and expanded its charter services.

In the 2000s, MasAir continued to grow. It acquired a majority stake in Aeromar, a regional airline in Mexico, and began operating international flights to Europe and the United States. In 2006, the airline launched its first low-cost airline, VivaAerobus, which was a collaboration between MasAir and Ireland’s Ryanair.

In 2012, the airline changed its name from AeroMéxico to MasAir in an effort to give the airline a more modern identity and to better reflect its position as a leading Mexican airline.

MasAir has also been involved in several incidents over the years. In 1988, one of its planes crashed near the Mexican city of Durango, killing all 97 people on board. The airline was also involved in a controversial incident in 2005, when the Mexican government accused it of engaging in price-fixing. The airline was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing.

Today, MasAir is one of the leading airlines in Mexico and is a major player in the Latin American aviation market. It has a fleet of more than 85 aircraft and flies to destinations in Mexico, the United States, Canada, and Europe. MasAir has also launched a number of low-cost airlines, including VivaAerobus, VivaColombia, and Viva Costa Rica.
