The airport was originally built in 1942 as part of the Willow Run manufacturing complex, which was created by Henry Ford to produce B-24 Liberator bombers during World War II. The airport was used to transport workers to and from the plant, as well as to test and transport the bombers that were being produced. After the war, the airport was sold to Wayne County and eventually opened for commercial traffic in 1947.

The airport was originally named Willow Run Airport, but in 2008 was renamed to honor former Detroit mayor Coleman A. Young, who had a major role in the airport's development. The airport has retained the code YIP, which is derived from the nearby town of Ypsilanti, where the Willow Run facility was located.
