The airport was first established as Manchester Municipal Airport in 1927. It began as a small airfield with a single runway and two hangars, which were used primarily by small, private aircraft. During World War II, the airport was expanded to include a larger runway and additional hangars, and it served as a training base for the Army Air Corps.
