The airport was built in 1929 and originally named Hiller Aviation Museum Airfield, in honor of the famous Hiller Aviation Museum located nearby. It was also known as San Carlos Airport and San Carlos Skypark. The airport has one runway and is serviced by a number of airlines, including United Airlines, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and JetBlue.

The airport code of SQL was determined by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in the late 1960s. The code is derived from its original name, Hiller Aviation Museum Airfield, and is an acronym for the museum’s initials.
