The airport was originally known as the Beverly Municipal Airport and was established in 1930 when the citizens of Beverly voted to purchase a parcel of land for the purpose of creating an airport. It was also used by the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, when it was renamed the Beverly Field.

The airport was renamed the Beverly Regional Airport in 1956, in recognition of its role in providing access to the region. The name was chosen to reflect the fact that it served not only Beverly, but also the Greater Beverly and North Shore area.

In 1972, Beverly Regional Airport was granted the three-letter identifier of BVY. This designation was chosen because its first two letters are the same as Beverly’s official abbreviation, BV. The third letter of the code is Y, which was chosen to represent the airport’s location in the state of Massachusetts.
