In 1953 the airport was renamed Greater Buffalo International Airport, and in 1970 it was renamed Buffalo Niagara International Airport in honor of the Niagara River that flows through the area.

Buffalo Niagara International Airport’s airport code, BUF, is derived from the airport’s former name, Buffalo Municipal Airport, as it was the only airport in the United States with the code BUF at the time.
