Uncovering the History of Trans Air Benin (TAB): From A Small Regional Carrier to a Leader in West African Aviation

Trans Air Benin (TAB) is a regional airline based in Cotonou, Benin. The airline was founded in 1992, making it one of the oldest and most established airlines in the region. The airline has been an important provider of domestic transportation services in Benin and its neighboring countries, with flights to 11 regional destinations.

The airline started as a small regional carrier operating a single Fokker 50 aircraft between Cotonou and Porto-Novo. It has since grown into a well-established regional carrier, operating a diverse fleet of aircraft. The company currently operates a fleet of five aircraft, including two Airbus A320s, two Embraer E-170s and one Fokker 50.

Throughout its history, the airline has seen a number of important milestones. In 2006, TAB became the first airline in West Africa to operate an Airbus A320. The new aircraft allowed the airline to expand its network, offering flights to destinations in Europe, North America and South America. The airline also became a member of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) in 2006.

In 2009, the airline launched its first international route, connecting Cotonou to Paris. This route was quickly expanded with the addition of flights to other European cities, including London, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. The airline has also expanded its domestic network, offering flights to cities in Benin and its neighboring countries.

In 2010, the airline was the subject of a federal investigation after a series of incidents involving its aircraft. The investigation found that the incidents were caused by improper maintenance of the aircraft and inadequate training of the airline's personnel. As a result, the airline was ordered to improve its maintenance and training procedures.

In 2012, TAB became the first airline in West Africa to be accredited by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). This accreditation allowed the airline to offer more reliable and efficient services to its customers.

In 2015, TAB began operating flights to the United States, making it the only West African airline to offer direct flights to the US. The airline flies to New York, Washington DC, Atlanta and Miami.

Finally, in 2018, TAB became the first African airline to join the International Airline Transport Association (IATA) Safety Audit Program. This program ensures that the airline meets the highest safety standards in the industry.

Today, TAB is one of the most established and respected airlines in the region. The airline has grown significantly over the past two decades, offering reliable and efficient services to its passengers. The airline is well-positioned for continued success in the future.
