Tracing the Evolving Journey of Mauritania Airlines: From Charter Airline to National Airline





Mauritania Airlines is the national airline of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. It was founded in 1960 as Compagnie Mauritanienne de Transports Aeriens and was originally a charter airline. In 1974, the airline was rebranded as Mauritania Airlines and began scheduled flights.

The Mauritania Airlines fleet consists of six Airbus A319-100 aircraft, two Airbus A320-200 aircraft, two ATR 72-500 aircraft, one ATR 42-600 aircraft, and one ATR 72-600 aircraft. The airline has previously operated a variety of aircraft including a Dash 8-400, a Boeing 727-200, a Gulfstream IV, a Boeing 737-400, and a Boeing 737-800. The airline also operates cargo flights with its fleet of ATR 72-500 aircraft.

Mauritania Airlines has a long and interesting history. It began in 1960 as a charter airline and its first flight was from Nouakchott to Dakar. In 1974, the airline was rebranded as Mauritania Airlines and began scheduled flights. The airline’s first international flight was to Paris in 1976.

The airline has experienced several milestones in its history. In 1979, the airline began operating its first international scheduled flights to Europe, connecting Nouakchott to Paris. The first Boeing 727-200 was acquired in 1982 and the airline began operating flights to the United States in 1983. In 1989, Mauritania Airlines became the first African airline to join the International Air Transport Association (IATA).





In 2003, Mauritania Airlines became the first African airline to join the Airline Transport Association (ATA). In 2006, the airline began operating flights to North Africa and Europe with the acquisition of a Boeing 737-800. In 2009, the airline began operating its first domestic flights, connecting Nouakchott to other cities in Mauritania.

Mauritania Airlines has had its share of incidents over the years. In 2005, a flight from Nouakchott to Paris crashed shortly after take-off due to a technical fault. All passengers and crew onboard were killed. The incident was the first fatal crash in the airline’s history. In 2007, the airline was the subject of a federal investigation after an incident involving the airline's Boeing 737-800 and a US Navy vessel.

Despite its history of incidents, Mauritania Airlines has continued to grow and evolve over time. The airline has expanded its routes to include international destinations such as Paris, London, Madrid, Rome, and Casablanca. The airline has also introduced several new aircraft to its fleet, including the Airbus A319-100, Airbus A320-200, and ATR 72-500. Mauritania Airlines has also become a member of several international associations, such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Airline Transport Association (ATA).

Mauritania Airlines is an important part of the country’s history and has experienced a great deal of growth and evolution over the years. The airline has expanded its fleet, routes, and membership in international associations. Despite its history of incidents, the airline has continued to evolve and serve its customers.
