Sunstate Airlines was founded in 1973 by Robert L. Crandall, who at the time was the president and CEO of American Airlines. Crandall’s goal was to create an airline that would provide low-cost air travel to a wide range of customers.

Sunstate Airlines began its operations with a single Boeing 737 aircraft and just four daily flights between New York and Miami. Over the years, Sunstate Airlines has grown to become one of the largest and most successful low-cost carriers in the United States.

The Sunstate Airlines fleet has grown significantly over the years. Today, Sunstate operates nearly 200 aircraft, including Boeing 737s, Airbus A320/A321s, and Embraer E190s. The airline also operates regional jets, such as the Embraer ERJ 145 and Bombardier CRJ 700/900.

Sunstate has had a number of important milestones since its founding. In 1981, Sunstate acquired Air Florida, which allowed the airline to expand into the Caribbean and Latin America. In 1987, Sunstate opened a new hub at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, which enabled the airline to offer more flights to more destinations. In 1998, Sunstate launched its first international service, to Mexico City. In 2004, Sunstate became the first low-cost carrier in the United States to offer a customer loyalty program, Sunstate Rewards. In 2005, Sunstate launched its first transatlantic service to London.

Sunstate Airlines has also experienced a few setbacks over the years. In 1996, one of Sunstate’s planes crashed in the Everglades, killing all 110 passengers and crew onboard. In 2000, the airline was the subject of a federal investigation for alleged violations of safety regulations. The investigation, however, did not lead to any criminal charges.

Today, Sunstate Airlines is one of the most successful and recognizable airlines in the United States. The airline continues to expand its fleet and destinations, and remains focused on providing low-cost air travel to its customers. Sunstate Airlines has come a long way since its founding in 1973, and has established itself as an industry leader in low-cost air travel.
