Innu Mikun Airlines: From Regional Carrier to Global Airline Giant

Innu Mikun Airlines is the largest airline in Canada, flying to more than 100 destinations across North America, Europe, and the Caribbean. Founded in 1973, the airline was originally a regional carrier operating flights between Labrador and Newfoundland. Over the years, the airline has grown to become one of the largest carriers in the world and one of the most recognizable airlines in Canada.

Innu Mikun Airlines began as a small regional airline, operating a fleet of five Cessna 402s. It was founded by a group of seven entrepreneurs who wanted to provide an air service to the people of Labrador and Newfoundland. The airline quickly gained popularity as it provided affordable and reliable air transportation to the region.

The airline’s first major milestone came in 1978 when it began operating international flights to the United States. This was the first time that a Canadian airline had operated a route between two countries. In the following years, the airline continued to expand its international routes and began to serve destinations in Europe and the Caribbean.

Innu Mikun Airlines began to modernize its fleet in the 1980s, replacing its aging Cessna 402s with more modern aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. By the end of the decade, the airline had grown to become one of the largest carriers in the world, with a fleet of more than 100 aircraft.

Innu Mikun Airlines experienced its first major incident in 1990 when an aircraft crashed while attempting to land in Halifax. There were no fatalities but the incident caused the airline to review its safety procedures and make several changes. In the following years, the airline has been involved in several other incidents and federal investigations but has always managed to maintain a high level of safety.

Innu Mikun Airlines continued to expand its operations throughout the 1990s and 2000s and in 2011, the airline became the first Canadian carrier to join the Star Alliance. Membership in this global airline alliance allowed the airline to offer its customers more destinations and improved services.

The airline continued to grow over the next decade and in 2021, it announced plans to expand its fleet to over 200 aircraft. This will make the airline one of the largest carriers in the world, with more than 300 destinations in over 50 countries.

Innu Mikun Airlines has come a long way since its founding in 1973. From a small regional carrier to one of the largest airlines in the world, the airline has shown an incredible ability to adapt to an ever-changing industry and to provide its customers with reliable and affordable air travel.
