Innu Mikun Airlines began to modernize its fleet in the 1980s, replacing its aging Cessna 402s with more modern aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. Innu Mikun Airlines experienced its first major incident in 1990 when an aircraft crashed while attempting to land in Halifax. There were no fatalities but the incident caused the airline to review its safety procedures and make several changes. In the following years, the airline has been involved in several other incidents and federal investigations but has always managed to maintain a high level of safety.

Innu Mikun Airlines continued to expand its operations throughout the 1990s and 2000s and in 2011, the airline became the first Canadian carrier to join the Star Alliance. Membership in this global airline alliance allowed the airline to offer its customers more destinations and improved services.

The airline continued to grow over the next decade and in 2021, it announced plans to expand its fleet to over 200 aircraft. This will make the airline one of the largest carriers in the world, with more than 300 destinations in over 50 countries.
