Buta Airways began operations in April 2007 with a fleet of just two aircraft, an Airbus A320 and a Boeing 737-800. The airline initially launched with a focus on domestic and regional routes, serving cities such as Baku, Istanbul, and Dubai. Over the years, the airline has also added more international destinations to its route network, including cities in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

In 2010, Buta Airways was awarded a license to operate flights to the United States, making it one of the few airlines to operate flights between Azerbaijan and the United States. This marked an important milestone in the history of Buta Airways, and was a major achievement for the airline.

In 2013, Buta Airways began operating its first long-haul route, a service between Baku and London Heathrow, marking another important milestone in the history of the airline. This route has since been expanded to include other European cities, such as Paris, Berlin, and Amsterdam.

In 2014, Buta Airways became the first airline in Azerbaijan to be awarded the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certificate, an internationally recognized standard for airline safety. This marked an important milestone for the airline and was a major achievement for the airline, as it demonstrated its commitment to safety and operational excellence.

In 2016, Buta Airways began operating its first domestic routes, linking Baku with other major cities in Azerbaijan, such as Ganja, Naftalan, and Zabrat. This marked another significant milestone in the history of the airline, as it allowed it to expand its reach within the country.

In 2018, Buta Airways became the first airline in Azerbaijan to be awarded the IATA Environment Assessment Program (IEnvA) certificate. This marked an important achievement for the airline, as it demonstrated its commitment to environmental sustainability and its support for green initiatives.

Unfortunately, Buta Airways has been involved in two major incidents in its history. In 2009, an Airbus A320 operated by the airline was involved in an air crash in the city of Baku, resulting in the death of all twelve passengers and crew onboard. In 2015, the airline was also the subject of a federal investigation by the US Department of Transportation, relating to allegations of price fixing.

Despite these incidents, Buta Airways has continued to operate successfully, and has seen significant growth and development over the years. The airline now operates a fleet of 28 aircraft, and serves numerous international destinations. Furthermore, the airline has achieved a number of important milestones, such as becoming the first airline in Azerbaijan to receive the IOSA and IEnvA certificates, and the first airline to operate domestic routes within the country.
