Discover the Fascinating History of SkyWest Airlines: From Small Commuter Airline to One of the Largest Regional Carriers in the World

SkyWest Airlines is an American regional airline headquartered in St. George, Utah. The airline is one of the largest regional airlines in the world, operating around 1,500 flights each day to over 250 destinations throughout North America. It was founded in 1972 as an independent commuter airline, and has since grown to become a regional carrier for major airlines such as American Airlines, United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and Delta Air Lines.

SkyWest Airlines began its operations in 1972 when four entrepreneurs in Salt Lake City purchased a small commuter airline, Air Utah. The company changed its name to SkyWest in 1979 and began to expand its operations to include more destinations in the western United States. In the early 1980s, the airline reorganized and began to operate as a regional carrier for major airlines.

SkyWest Airlines has grown exponentially since it began as a small commuter airline. In 1995, the airline began to fly as a regional carrier for American Airlines, and in 1997, it began to fly for United Airlines. Today, SkyWest Airlines is the largest regional carrier in the world, and it operates over 1,500 flights each day to 250 destinations throughout North America.

The SkyWest Airlines fleet consists of over 300 aircraft, including regional jets, turboprops, and regional airliners. The airline operates a variety of different aircraft, such as the Bombardier CRJ-200, CRJ-700, and CRJ-900, Embraer EMB-170 and EMB-175, and Canadair CRJ-1000. The airline also operates a few ATR-42 aircraft.

SkyWest Airlines has achieved many milestones over the years. In 1985, the airline was the first regional airline to be approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate as a regional carrier. In 1994, the airline became the first regional carrier to be accepted into the Regional Airline Association. In 1997, SkyWest Airlines became the first regional carrier to offer service to Hawaii. In 2011, the airline became the first regional carrier to introduce in-flight Wi-Fi. In 2020, the airline became the first regional carrier to receive the FAA’s Diamond Safety Award.

SkyWest Airlines has also had some unfortunate incidents over the years. In 1993, one of its planes was involved in a mid-air collision over Scottsdale, Arizona, which resulted in the death of all five people on board. In 2003, one of its planes crashed near St. George, Utah, resulting in the death of three people and one serious injury. In 2019, the airline was under federal investigation for alleged violations of the Railway Labor Act.

The airline has grown to become one of the largest regional carriers in the world, and it operates over 1,500 flights each day to 250 destinations throughout North America. The airline has achieved many milestones over the years, from becoming the first regional airline to be approved by the FAA to offering in-flight Wi-Fi.
